India was ruled by the British for almost 200 years. 

When India attained freedom on 14th August 1947, India has nothing called 'Constitution' and governance of a country is largely happening on lines “Government of India act, 1935″.

So, on 28 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr. B R Ambedkar as chairman. 

• The Constitution of India is the longest written Constitution all over the world and took around 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to be completed.
• The concept of liberty, equality, and fraternity came from the French constitution while the Five-Year Plans came from the USSR constitution.
• Two copies of the Indian Constitution were hand-written, one in English and one in Hindi. Both  were signed on 24th of January in 1950 by around 308 members of the Assembly.

You know what, the constitution was originally completed on 26 November 1949, but the Constitution in totality came into effect from January 26,1950.

During the independence struggle, The president of the congress Mr. Jawahar Lal Nehru hoisted the Indian flag to celebrate 26 January of every year as “ Independence Day" or Purna Swaraj Day.

So to commemorate that day in history the constituent finally after two and half years later came to effect on January 26, 1950, when the Indian Constitution came into effect thus making India one of the biggest democracies in the world.!
